Microplastics in Coral Reef Ecosystems

This study assesses microplastic pollution levels in coral reefs of Central Malé Atoll. The research aims to quantify contamination and evaluate the broader ecological implications for reef health.

Coral Bleaching Impact Surveys

A Maldives-wide initiative evaluating the effects of the concurrent mass coral bleaching event. Surveys compare bleaching impacts between inner and outer reefs across multiple atolls to inform climate resilience strategies.

Human–Shark Interactions at Feeding Sites

A combined ecological and social science investigation into interactions between humans and sharks at shark feeding areas in Malé Atoll. The study examines both behavioural responses and stakeholder perceptions.

Tunicate and Zoanthid Biodiversity and Connectivity

This biodiversity study collects tunicate and zoanthid samples for DNA barcoding to assess species distribution, genetic connectivity, and potential invasive behaviour across atoll systems.

Long-Term Coral Reef Monitoring 

Celebrating eight years of continuous coral reef monitoring in the central Maldives, this project revisits long-term benthic and fish survey sites to track ecological change.  Insights build on foundational work, including a pivotal 2019 study on post-bleaching recovery following the 2016 mass bleaching event.
